Resurrected by S.M. Schmitz

Dietrich thought death was final. But he was wrong. When Dietrich buried his fiancée, Lottie, he descended into his own personal Hell – until he runs into her in a café in Houston two years later. Except this couldn’t be her. Not after two years. She speaks the same, shares the same memories, yet something is different.

Determined to unravel this mystery, Dietrich finds she has been resurrected by a mysterious force. But for Lottie, something went wrong, and her existence threatens to undermine the lucrative business that made her resurrection possible. As Dietrich becomes locked in a deadly struggle with those who want to destroy her, he will discover just how much he’s willing to sacrifice for the woman he once loved.

Resurrected is the first book in the Resurrected series, and begins the incredible journey of a group of friends who are struggling to survive against those who want them dead to protect their secrets.

Book 1 of the Resurrected Trilogy

Our review…

5*

Dietrich works for “the agency” and is mostly a desk analyst, but when he goes into the field, he’s deadly. We hear about things he has done in the past, but he sees it as just a job that doesn’t define him. It was chilling yet not chilling because I really liked his character. Despite his occupation, Dietrich comes across as the boy next door. This book is told completely from the Dietrich’s point of view. We get inside of his head, and he felt so real that I had no difficulty putting myself into his shoes.

Dietrich has a problem. The love of his life (Lottie) died in an accident and he can’t move on. We feel the depths of his grief. When he runs across a woman who looks, talks, and smells like his dead fiancée, he has trouble believing it. When he learns exactly what is happening, it’s even worse than he thought.

Just like Dietrich, the reader doesn’t understand what is happening and experiences eventual revelations through the filter of his skeptical, analytical mind. When he tells his best friend and work colleague Eric what he knows, everything escalates.

I read the entire last third of the book with a tremendous sense of angst, and the last ten percent just about killed me wanting to know how it could possibly end. I almost made myself late to work one morning so I could finish it.

The remaining two books are out in this series. Insurrection is told from Eric’s point of view and Final Sacrifice is told from Lottie’s point of view. I look forward to continuing with these three characters.

Our review…

Aliens have invaded earth, and they are not friendly.

ER Nurse Alexandra Bock wakes up a prisoner inside an alien spaceship. She has to learn to interact with aliens, some of which know English or have translators and some that do not. Martiran Captain Gryf Helyg is also imprisoned by the aliens who invaded earth and he’s the key to stopping the invasion. Alexandra and Gryf must trust each other and work together to save earth. Main tropes include captivity, alien invasion, and some space travel, although that’s not the focus.

Prophecy is a good choice for readers who trend toward the romantic side of science fiction romance. There are several steamy scenes to keep you warm at night. I’m not a hard science person and I found that it had the right balance of science and romance. This book is the beginning of The Prophecy series and does not have a cliffhanger ending.
